Looking for a healthy snack?
Organic Sweet Potatoes are the perfect quick snack. Here's a recipe that incorporates organic raw apple cider for extra health benefits.
1 lg Sweet Potato
1 tbl Grape Seed Oil
1 tbl Organic Apple Cider
1/4 tsp Himalayan Sea Salt
1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper
1/8 tsp Black Pepper

Slice your potato into small, thin rounds. Put potatoes and all ingedients listed above into a small plastic bag and shake until potatoes are covered with oil and seasoning.
Layer on a baking sheet and bake for approx. 18 minutes. I like to turn mine over about half way between cooking time. For a crispier potato chip add a few minutes to cooking time or broil for the last 1-2 minutes

One of my steps in going natural and organic was to kick my Starbucks and Keurig coffee habit.  I was afraid I wasn't going  to find an alternative that I could transition to and would have to quit cold turkey like I had in the past when I was pregnant.  I was also worried it would be like a diet, something I'd only stick to for a couple of weeks because the cravings would still be there.  You know the feeling,  you wake and and look forward to that hot cup of Joe in your hands but y0u fight the cravings,  then feel deprived because you didn't cave in. Yup,  been there done that.  So this is why I'm really stoked to share this product with you.  It's called Dandy Blend and I pretty much had it one morning instead of my coffee and never looked back.  I admit I had a slight headache the first morning but NOTHING  like I'd experienced in the past when I'd tried to quit.  The taste is like coffee but to be honest it wasn't better it was just different. I'm realizing everything in this health journey things are going to taste and feel different and I'm in in for the long haul.  Strangely I haven't missed coffee like I had in the passed and I don't wake up thinking about my cup of Joe  like I had before either. After about 2 months of having a morning cup of Dandy Blend I began trying to have a smoothly or green juice instead.  I have to admit  after almost 3 months I no longer crave anything in the morning other than my green juice.  Try it you might like it too!

    I haven't mentioned much about my health journey.  I've mostly posted about skincare and a few nutritional, tasty treats I've come to incorporate into my day.  I've always felt I ate well but I recently realized I know nothing!  About 3 years ago I started having major cramps shortly after eating and sometimes even during a meal.  After a visit with my doctor followed by blood tests, an ultrasound, MRI, endoscopy and colonoscopy there's was nothing significantly wrong to be causing such pain at such sporadic times.  A closer look into my diet was necessary.  Yes, I probably should have started there, but I had an over zealous doctor that probably didn't know as much about nutrition to be helpful.  A comprehensive analysis showed I was dairy intolerant, soy and had several sensitive food allergies, none of them being as important as the dairy.  This meant no more cream cheese bagels in the morning, cheese on my  sandwiches, less ice cream, no more sour cream, you get the picture.  I had stopped drinking milk a year or two prior after reading a great book "Skinny Bitch" by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin.

..............(highly recommend it) and had switched to SOY milk.  In the last year however I've learned I have an intolerance to soy and soy isn't all what's it's cracked up to be.  No Bueno, for us girls!  Anyway, I'm learning everyday about new foods, foods we shouldn't eat, and those we should.  Incorporating the beneficial foods into my families diet is the next challenge.  I'm getting the stink eye from the groms, my husband thinks it's a fad, rolls with it, tastes what I make and tolerates it.  My only supporter is my teenage daughter, at least I have one!  So why this post today? Well, I had to throw it out there. I love to write about skincare but I realize it only brings so much interest it's only a minuet part of my day.  Healthy living encompasses so much more and I believe more and more to have good skin it's got to start from a good, healthy, solid foundation from the inside.  So the journey continues....!

 
 
Automating a Meal

According to a study published in the medical journal Obesity: Many people who have lost an average of 30lbs. and kept it off is because they have “automated” a meal.

What does this mean?

Let me explain since I too have had success with this.

I was looking to lose the little muffin top I was getting. You see I was daily intolerant and didn’t know it. So the muffin top was a lot of bloat. I was experiencing cramping and bloating and was basically miserable but just every now and then. Weird huh, but once I eliminated the dairy and began incorporating whole foods into my diet my bloating went away and my energy level is now higher that it’s ever been.

I started by “automating” my breakfast with a smoothie.

I found healthy foods I liked and that made it easy stick to them. By “automating” one meal a day it wasn’t a struggle.

That’s what the green smoothie habit does for you. Every day, you KNOW what one meal will be: a quart of green smoothie (and any other healthy foods, if you need more calories because you’re an athlete etc.).

Here’s one of my favorite recipes:

1 banana

1 carrot

1 cup frozen berries (bluberries, raspberry, blackberries etc.)

1 sliver ginger

1 cup (or fistful) spinach or kale

½-1 cup coconut water (depending on desired thickness)

1 tbl. Chai seeds

1 tsp.. honey

1tsp. cinnamon

4 ice cubes

Frozen fruit makes the smoothie thicker so you can always use a frozen banana instead of a fresh one for added thickness.

Yes, everything does seem to start falling apart after 40.  I ended the year with my annual physical to once again be told I need to watch my cholesterol.  I know this, high cholesterol runs in my family. I hate fish oil and have fought it for the last couple years but it's now time to be consistent.  I had an EKG that worried my physician and she sent me to have a Stress test and see a Cardio Specialist.  All is well, it was a false positive heart attack and my heart is in great shape.  Whew!  Needless to say she advised me to up my fish oil (or at least take the daily recommended dose) and Drink More Water. Once again I'm dehydrated so I have to try harder.  Does anyone else have a problem drinking water in the day? It doesn't taste good and it makes me pee way too many times, annoying! This year I'm really going to pay more attention to my health and particularly my diet. More water, more greens and more oil yipee!

I'm working up to my restart. The rest of the cinnamon rolls are gone, the pumpkin bread, caramel corn and pies have been thrown out.  I didn't start a juice detox on Jan. 1st  however, I eased into this year eliminating most of the sweets I had become accustomed to eating over the last month.  I usually eat really well throughout the year and allow myself treats whenever I want.  But good god, I took full advantage of it this holiday and felt I needed to ease back on the sugar instead of cutting it out cold turkey.  I really could have done it either way but I chose to do it gradually because I could. Over the last few days I've incorporated a smoothie/protein shake in my day and today I went completely green.  Here's to a good start!
